After putting on my first Tasmanian brew yesterday evening, it was time for a hike in the Southern Tasmanian Mountains. We decided to go for a walk up Hartz Peak, one of the recommended walks in the 60 great short walks of Tasmania. It is described as an easy hike which should take 4 hours (we took just over 2 hours), gently climbing at the start before a final steep ascent. Total change in altitude is about 400 m, reached at Hartz peak, the highest peak in the Hartz mountain range at 1255 m. Once at the top with beautiful weather conditions like today, one has 360 degrees of scenery, surrounded by alpine views, far views to the sea and a few glacial lakes. The path up to the peak is very well maintained, with the vast majority of the track being a wooden path, except for the final ascent which is a mixture of scrambling and very high steps, well worth the effort though.
